Scattered Light in Sydney 2012 and Exhibition Updates: 11/01/11

Jim's large-scale, outdoor public artwork Scattered Light will be installed on the front lawn of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney, Australia. This is part of the MCA's grand re-opening exhibition, Marking Time, March 29 - June 3, 2012.

Current and Recent Exhibitions:
Exploded Views at SFMOMA, November 5, 2011 - September 25, 2012. "This new installation explodes the moving image into three dimensions, illuminating the Haas Atrium with a flickering grid of light that is part sculpture, part cinematic screen." Read more here.

4th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, 23 September - 30 October 2011, just ended. Exploded View (Commuters) was on display.

Wow, there sure has been a lot going on in the studio these last few months. We've been so busy that we really haven't had any time to keep you all in the loop. So here is a list of some already opened, but still ongoing shows that Jim is Exhibiting in:

America: Now and Here, May 6 to May 26 2011, Leedy Voulkos Art Center, Kansas City. America: Now and Here is a cross-country journey of art and ideas with some of America’s most celebrated visual artists, musicians, poets, playwrights, and filmmakers. After Kansas City, the exhibit will travel to Detroit and Chicago in 2011, with more stops scheduled across the country from 2012. See Here for more details.

Lights On Market

SFAC: Community Art Celebration on Market Street at 1119 Market Street, San Francisco, December 9, 2010 through June 9, 2011.

The San Francisco Arts Commission has officially launched The ARTery Project, a new National Endowment for the Arts-funded initiative dedicated to revitalizing the Central Market corridor through the arts. The ARTery Project kicks off its exciting series of events with the debut of three site-specific light installations by artists Jim Campbell, Theodore Watson and Paul Notzold.

Madison Square Park

Jim Campbell: Scattered Light in Madison Square Park, New York City, October 21 through February 28, 2011.

The Madison Square Park Conservancy's Mad. Sq. Art program is pleased to announce three new site-specific commissions by pioneering new media artist Jim Campbell. This is Campbell's largest and most ambitious public exhibition to date and features three new major public art commissions: Scattered Light, Broken Window, and Voices in the Subway Station. Both abstract and representational, physical and image-based, the three works that comprise Scattered Light will illuminate and activate Madison Square Park with Campbell's light-based scupltural approach to today's concept of pixilated image-making, in a manner that is at once elegantly simple and quintessentially contemporary.

Exhibitions Currently On View

Material Evidence: a Phenomenology of Matter at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum in Manhattan, Kansas is on view from October 8 through Feb 8, 2011. The exhibition spans a range of media, and the boundaries between disciplines and within single works become blurred.

Jim Campbell: In the Repose of Memory, dual solo shows at The Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University and the Roanoke College Galleries both in Roanoke, Virginia, from September 16 through December 4, 2010. This exhibition features major installations and pieces that incorporate light, sound, and computer-generated images that often represent the evocation of memory.

Shadow Dance at the KAdE in Amersfoort, Netherlands, from September 18 through January 9, 2011. This group exhibition features work by more than 30 international artists, all fascinated by the effects of shadow.

Vital Signs: New Media from the Permanent Collection at the San Jose Museum of Art in California from June 12 through February 6, 2011. The new media artists in this exhibition use technology to replicate these vital signs, but also to explore the inner source of life, those elements unseen but often sensed.

Come as you are: the Absent Body in Art at the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen in Germany, from August 5 through November 28, 2010. Organized by Martin Heus and Jacob Birken and originally exhibited at The Kunstraum: Morgenstrasse in Karlsruhe Germany. In this exhibition, not only photography but also painting as well as video and performance art provide sufficient occasion for investigating the question as to the representability of bodies.

Jim Campbell - New Work: 4/14/10

Jim will have a new work at Hosfelt Gallery San Francisco 7 May - 19 June 2010, Opening Reception Thursday May, 6 5 - 7:30 pm. Jim’s seventh solo exhibition at Hosfelt Gallery will include an "exploded" L.E.D. work - the precursor to a piece that will be exhibited in the atrium of SFMoMA in 2011 - in which the lighted pixels creating imagery are arranged in three-dimensional space rather than on a flat plane.

Exploded View: 4/14/10

Jim will have new work at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery April 16 - May 22, 2010. The Opening Reception will be Thursday, April 15, 6-8pm. Widely considered one of the pioneering artists of the twenty-first century, Jim Campbell manipulates the base materials of electronics and computers into a visual haiku of the information age. The essence of Campbell’s art is not in soldered connections, but rather a sublime reduction of vision into rhythm. What is barely deciphered by the eye is strangely comprehensible to the mind, as if reconstructing familiar memories from the future. Campbell’s innovative techniques transform the pervasive media verse surrounding us – and our relation to it.

The exhibition coincides with the release of Material Light, a new monograph published by Hatje Cantz.

San Diego International Airport: 2/25/10

Jim will be creating a large public work to hang in The San Diego Airport concourse. This project will be part of The Green Build and the Airport Authority’s Public Art Master Plan which includes artworks in both the existing facilities and new constructions. Jim’s project is a collaboration with the Design Team under the Green Build heading “The Multisensory Journey” the premise of which is to create “…a multisensory experience that extends the entire length of the new terminal expansion and functions as an intuitive way-finding element”.
